I found I needed to print a few more sunflowers on cotton fabric sheets for my March 12 x 12 piece today, and guess what? My HP Officejet all-in-one broke today. It kept telling me it had a paper jam, but I couldn't find a jam when I checked it out. When Joe came home he looked at it and found no paper inside but lots of black ink powder. Evidently the ink cartridge jammed somehow, and dumped the ink and now he can't get to the ink cartridge to get it out. He's going to check tomorrow and see if it can be repaired at a reasonable cost, but he doubts it.This is the third HP Officejet all-in-one we've had go bad on us in 5 years. The first, a G85, died before the warranty was out and they replaced it immediately. The replacement lasted a little over 2 years and the printer broke on it. It would cost as much to repair as to buy a new one so we bought the current 7200 a year and 3 months ago. It managed to last just beyond the warranty before it broke. It has been the printer portion that broke in all of them. I admit, we do lots of printing for the business, my photos on fabric, quilt patterns, and my genealogy research and books; but they are rather expensive to replace every year. I'd like to find one that is not a disposable use and toss variety.
What kind of luck have any of you had with your HP inkjet printers? What would you recommend as a good reliable machine for us? We need one that can print, scan and fax. It takes too much room to have separate pieces for each function.
Where have you purchased your and did you get the extended warranty. If so, do you recommend the extended warranty? We haven't had very good luck with the extended warranties paying for what needs to be repaired. They tend to cover everything except what actually breaks. And since they have a lot more experience with the equipment than we do, they know what to exclude. Do I sound a little cynical?!!!
In the meantime, I'll get my 12 x 12 as far as I can without the use of a printer. We have to get this fixed or replaced quickly. Like yesterday?!

I'm really sorry to hear about your bad luck with printers. I've had 3 HP printers and all have worked fantastic. I've had a 7310 at work that I've been using over 2 years, an AIO (don't remember the model) that I used at home for at least 3 years and recently gave to my Mom. I bought a 7410 for home use last fall and it's doing well so far. I don't know how many pages you need printed but I'd be happy to do some for you this weekend if you want.
I have a HP psc 2210 and it is working just fine--but, we don't use it all that much. What about a less expensive printer just for your fabric use?
I've had bad luck with ink jet printers too! Our last one exploded, literally, and little springy pieces went flying out everywhere. I was able to collect enough of them and put them back so that we were able to print a few pages more, but now we have a b&w laser printer--great for printing on paper--doesn't run when wet, but of course you can't make all those wonderful fabric things.
I have HP printers and love them. When printing on fabric I use an Epson printer. I have had 3 epsons and at just over one year they stop printing. The one I have now makes copies but will not print from the computer. I am in the same printer HE** that you are. I need a new printer before I can start my April 12 X 12. I am sure next week I will purchase a new Epson.
I know zip about this subject so will suggest this: Try consumerreports.com. For a $4 monthly subscription you can research all printers. (Don't forget to cancel the subscription at the end of a month.) Meanwhile you can research anything and everything. That's what I do when we're planning a hefty purchase.
Isn't it funny how we live in a throwaway society now. Cheaper and more sensible to buy new than fix. I doubt repair shops even exist anymore.
I forgot to say: We NEVER get the extended warranty. It's a rip.
Sadly, I have not had great luck with HP inkjets...love their laserjets but the inkjets have all pooped out around a year or so, just after the warranty...
I am using a cheapie Lexmark inkjet and so far it has 3 years on it - we actually have two of them and the only sucky thing is the ink costs almost as much as what you pay for the printer in the first place - I probably could get a better deal on the ink if I would order it off the internet, but it always seems like the danged things run out right in the middle of something important and we run over to the all night Walmart to get the refills..
My DH has the color laserjet, but he won't let me near it with a piece of fabric...
We have had Epsons, HPs and Brother inkjets...but the only ones that keep on printing are the Lexmarks...(and they are cheap enough at Walmart that if they break its not a big deal to get a new one)
