Three More Names of God Blocks

Thanks for your comments about our wildfires. I am happy to report that the rain and snow allowed both fires to be stopped. 20 families lost homes, and 2 firefighters died in the Ordway fire. No structures were lost and I tanker pilot lost his life in the Fort Carson fire. The rain and snow helped but today the temp was back up in the 70s and will be hotter, drier and windy again tomorrow which will make for more Red Flag Fire days. I love the warm weather but could do without that everlasting, moisture sucking wind.

In spite of all that has been going on I managed to finish 3 more of my Quilting the Names of God blocks.


Week 12 The Lord Is Peace_Yahweh Shalom. "Shalom is a Hebrew word, so much richer in its range of meanings than the Enlish word 'peace', which usually refers to the absence of outward conflict or to a state of inner calm. The concept of shalom includes these ideas but goes beyond them, meaning 'wholeness,' 'completeness,' 'finished work,' 'perfection,' 'safety,' or 'wellness.' Shalom comes from living in harmony with God...When you pray to Yahweh Shalom, you are praying to the source of all peace." I plan to use the greeting "Shalom" more often in the future, it is a good word.

I chose the blue fabric to represent peace and the gold for plenty.

"So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. (Judges 6:24)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petitions, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7.


Week 13. The Lord Is My Rock_Yahweh tsuri. I could not figure out how to paper piece this Cornerstone block [and I am terrible at doing set-in seams) so made it with fused machine quilting. I chose colors to represent stone. (Colorado means red and we do have lots of red rocks here, not to mention some gold rocks). I am pleased with the results of my color scheme; while being a bit hesitent to use the bright red with the more maroon reds, the effect is what I wanted to create.


"The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronhold, my refuge and my savior--from violent men you save me. I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies." (2 Samuel 22:2-4


Week 15. The Lord Is My Shepherd_Yahweh Roi. My Sheep Fold block is paper pieced with green fabric for the green pastures. I also like the little swirls that remind me of curley sheep's wool.

"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." (Psalm 23:1-3)





These names and scriptures are more meaningful to me this evening than they even were when I did my daily studies. As I was finishing photographing the blocks, I received a phone call that one of my very dear cousins, who has been bravely fighting pancreatic cancer for the last 14 months, went to his room this evening and shot himself to death, with absolutely no warning to anyone (wife, son or 2 close brothers) that he simply couldn't take any more pain and suffering.

The Latest Quilting the Names of God blocks

Here are my two latest blocks for the study.

Week 10 is the Modern Flame block for the Consuming Fire/Jealous God_Esh Oklah, El Kanna. I chose the fabrics to symbolize the colors and swirls seen in a flame.

"Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4:23-24)

Week 11 is the Peace Dove for the Holy One of Israel_Qedosh Yisrael. The white dove in a blue starry sky appeared quite peaceful to me. The gold always represents the presence of God, the Holy One of Israel.

"The LORD said to Moses, 'Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I the LORD your God am holy.'" (Leviticus 19:1-2)

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." (Isaiah 6-3b)

I was struck by the contrast between the Flame and the Dove. Our Almighty God is so awesome and incomprehensible to we finite beings that His attributes sometimes seem to us to be almost contradictory. I am glad to have a God who is so huge that we mere humans can never limit or manipulate Him. [Athough, I am sorry to say, that at times I find myself trying to. What a waste of time and energy!]

I remembering once reading in some AA literature a quote something like this:

"I found out there was a God; and He wasn't me." "Let go and let God."

More Quilting the Names of God Blocks

Week 6 Stars and Hearts Forever fused, machine applique block for the name LORD/YAHWEH.

I originally placed the hearts on a white and gold background but it was too simple and bland. I wanted this block to represent the deep incomprehensibility of the infinite Lord to his finite creations. To me it also represents God's playfulness toward us.

"God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites:'I AM has sent me to you.'" "God also said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD [Yahweh], the God of your fathers--has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation." (Exodus 3:14-15)


Week 8 is a fused, machine applique Purple Coneflower block representing The LORD Who Heals/Yahweh Rophe.

"If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." -Exodus 15:26 NKJV

Week 9 is a pieced Banner block in red, gold, and metallic gold for the LORD My Banner/Yahweh Nissi.

I did easy half square triangles to make this block and tried them in various configurations until I found the one I wanted. The imagery of the banner brings to mind the colorful photos I've seen of Italian Renaissance festivals with all the colorful costumes and banners, which probably influenced my choice of color arrangement in this block.

"Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. He said, 'For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.'" --Exodus 17:15-16

"See, I willl beckon to the Gentiles, I will lift up my banner to the peoples;... I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save." --Isaiah 49:22,25

The blocks for weeks 5 and 7 are still works in progress and I'm ready to start the block for week 10. I hope to get, and stay, up to date on the blocks for this study.

Remember That Great Reading Pillow Pattern?

I'm now able to do a little typing with both hands; but I can't grip or hold any weight, or drive the car, or fasten my bra, etc. I'm also having more problem than usual holding books to read, especially hardbound books, so I remembered that great pattern that was hanging above my cutting table and dug thru my vintage stash for a heavy cotton fabric, suitable for that kind of wear and tear.

I found several yards of a big floral from the 30s or 40s which I got a few years ago on eBay and have never figured where to use. Since it makes me feel good to look at it, and I'm not in the best of temper, given my level of frustration, I decided to use some of it for the pillow. I still have to find a coordinating fabric for trim and welting.

Here are the pieces, minus the trim for the pockets and bias strips for the welting. If I can't find the appropriate coordinating fabric in my stash, I hope I can manage to drive to the Creative Cloth Closet tomorrow and see what Denise has available.

I'm less grumpy already, now that I'm working on a fabric project. Mandy wants to make one, also, and wondered if she could do it out of denim. I think denim would be great. She has sewn a couple of interesting fabric collages while here which lead me to believe that I'm going to have to introduce her to landscape quilting.


The other project I managed to do while still wearing the splint, without the sling, was the Quilting the Names of God block for week 4, the Thousand Stars for the Everlasting/Eternal God/El Olam.

"Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the Lord, the Eternal God." _Genesis 21:33

"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." _Isaiah 40:28-29


I used black and white fabrics with gold stars on a gold background. The block is fused and machine appliqued with gold zigzag stitches.

My daily Bible readings, lately, have been in Genesis and Leviticus where God gave instructions on the clothing for the priests and the decoration for the tabernacle. They were to use red, blue, purple, gold, and white on the high priest's garments. So I decided that I need to find a purple with gold fabric with a geometric design to go with the fabrics I've already chosen. Green is not one of the colors listed but I've already used green and since it is the color for growth and nature, I've decided that I still choose to include it.

More Quilting the Names of God Blocks

For week 2 of our study I fused and machine appliqued this Desert Rose block for the God Who Sees Me/El Roi. The Desert Rose represents Hagar when she ran away into the desert and met God who saved her and gave her a promise "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count."...


She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'I have now seen the One who sees me.'" --Genesis 16:13

The week 3 block is a paper pieced The Mountain Peak block which represents God Almighty/El Shaddai.

"When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless, I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.'" --Genesis 17:1-2


I have chosen fabrics with abstract and geometic gold touched designs on black, white, red, blue, green, and gold for my Quilting the Names of God quilt. The fabrics for Praying the Names of Jesus
are also gold touched but the designs are based on nature since Jesus came down to live and die on earth; he could be seen and touched. The abstract designs are more austere and less natural since the Bible tells us that humans cannot look upon the glory of God with natural eyes.
